Vision 2050: Actions for a Sustainable City

STAR has been providing sustainable transport advice and solutions to local authorities, transport operators and the private sector for 13 years.  We recognise the increasing challenges faced by our urban areas, particularly:

  • The demands placed on existing road networks from the growing trend towards urbanisation
  • The challenge of making public transport an attractive alternative to the car
  • The difficulties of providing mass transit solutions for sprawling urban areas
  • The negative impact of high car usage on society’s health and well being

For our urban areas to become fully sustainable in social, economic and environmental terms, a radical, multi-faceted approach will be required, which tackles transport issues alongside land use planning, waste management and other related policy areas.

STAR has developed a 13-point plan called ‘Vision 2050: Actions for a Sustainable City’ - a series of inter-locking transport and sustainability options for UK urban areas, to reduce the negative impacts of the transport sector on the environment and society as a whole.  Our Vision provides decision makers with the necessary tools to future-proof their urban areas.  It addresses sustainability from the perspective of creating liveable cities, where trips to access essential facilities and services are attractive by walking, cycling and public transport, where waste disposal has positive knock-on benefits for the community and where freight movements avoid jamming our city centre streets.

We believe the initiative must be seized and implemented at the strategic level.  We have prepared detailed Briefing Papers on each of our proposed sustainable initiatives.  We would welcome the opportunity to present our Vision to you and discuss how we can develop a detailed plan of action for your urban area to ensure that it will be liveable and sustainable in the future.

The 13 elements of our STAR Vision are:

  • Superblocks
  • 20-Minute Communities
  • Joint Ventures
  • Targeted "Carrots & Sticks"
  • Connected & Autonomous Vehicles (Driverless Vehicles)
  • Centralisation v Decentralisation
  • An Enhanced Approach to Project Appraisal (Cost Benefit Analysis)
  • Measuring Sustainability
  • Access Alliance Programme - local community initiatives
  • Inclusive & Integrated Public Transport
  • Happy Cities
  • Waste Management
  • Freight Initiatives

Please contact Norman or Clare at STAR for more information about how we can help you.
